Hadith 3404

Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that Allah Almighty sent revelation upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while I was with him. I got up and closed the door between myself and him. When the revelation ended, he said to me: "Aisha! Jibreel is conveying greetings of peace to you."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) addressed Maryam (alayhas salam) directly, whereas when conveying salam, he did not address Aisha (radi Allahu anha) directly. This is because Maryam (alayhas salam) did not have a husband, so she was addressed directly. However, due to the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) showed respect to Aisha (radi Allahu anha), just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) showed respect to Umar (radi Allahu anhu) when he saw Umar’s palace in Paradise, so that he would not feel any jealousy.

From this hadith, it is also understood that it is permissible to greet a non-mahram woman with salam, provided there is no fear of fitnah (temptation or trial). In this era of tribulation, it is better to avoid this.

In this hadith, the mention is made of Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) conveying salam, and from this Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has established the relevant chapter heading.

Hadith Commentary:
The relevance of the chapter is established through the response of Aisha radi Allahu anha.
From this, the virtue of Aisha radi Allahu anha is also proven.
She is the one to whom even Jibril alayhis salam conveys greetings of peace.
May Allah, the Most Pure, send abundant salutations upon such a pure lady on our behalf as well, and may He grant us the benefit of her supplications on the Day of Resurrection. Ameen.
Aisha as-Siddiqah radi Allahu anha lived a long life of 63 years and passed away in Madinah Munawwarah on the 17th of Ramadan, 57 AH.
Radi Allahu anha wa ardaha. Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:
From this hadith, it is also understood that a greeting of peace (salam) given in absence should be conveyed to the concerned person, and the one to whom the salam is conveyed should respond to it immediately. Then, the reply to a greeting of peace given in absence can be given in two ways:
➊ Only include the one who gave the salam in the supplication, as in this hadith, where Aisha radi Allahu anha included only Jibril alayhis salam in the supplication for peace.
➋ Include both the one who gave the salam and the one who conveyed it, as when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam conveyed the salam of Jibril alayhis salam to Sayyidah Khadijah radi Allahu anha, she included the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as well in her supplication for peace when replying.

Hadith Commentary:
The relevance of this hadith to the chapter heading is as follows: Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) used to come to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the form of Dihyah Kalbi, and Dihyah was a man, so his ruling was also that of a man. From this hadith, it is established that a man may greet a woman and a woman may greet a man, even if they are non-mahram (strangers), but observing proper veiling (purdah) is necessary.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) used to come to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the form of Dihyah Kalbi (radi Allahu anhu), and in this regard, his ruling is that of men.
It is understood from this that a man may greet a woman and a woman may greet a man, even if they are non-mahram (strangers), but the rulings of veiling (hijab) remain in their place and must be observed.
(2)
In any case, when it is permissible to converse with women when there is a need, then what objection can there be to offering greetings (salam), especially since giving salam is a prescribed right in Shariah.
It should not be neglected on the basis of a supposed fitnah (temptation).
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that if there are both men and women present in a gathering, then by consensus it is permissible to offer salam.
(Fath al-Bari: 11/43)
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
By "you," the intent was the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Hadith Commentary:
Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) conveyed greetings (salam) from himself, whereas regarding Khadijah (radi Allahu anha), Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) conveyed greetings from his Lord and also conveyed greetings from himself.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Virtues, Hadith: 3820)
From this, some scholars have established the superiority of Khadijah (radi Allahu anha) over Aisha (radi Allahu anha).
We will discuss this matter further ahead.
In any case, this hadith indicates the virtue and merit of Sayyidah Aisha (radi Allahu anha).

Hadith Commentary:
In the narration, the name of Aisha radi Allahu anha is mentioned in a shortened form as simply "Aish."
This is precisely the point of correspondence with the chapter.

Explanation:
1:
From this hadith, it is understood that if a greeting of peace (salam) is conveyed in absentia through someone or comes written in a letter, its reply should be given immediately.
And it should be given in the same manner as mentioned above.

Explanation:
1:
This contains a great honor for Aisha (radi Allahu anha). Some people have also deduced from this hadith that Khadijah (radi Allahu anha) is superior to Aisha (radi Allahu anha), because for Khadijah (radi Allahu anha), Jibril (alayhis salam) conveyed salam from Allah, whereas for Aisha (radi Allahu anha), Jibril (alayhis salam) conveyed salam from himself.

Benefits and Issues:

It is recommended (mustahabb) to send greetings of peace (salam) to someone who is absent.

➋ And it is also necessary to reply to it.
First, give supplication (du'a) to the one who brought the salam, and then to the one who sent it.
That is, say: (Alaik wa alayhi as-salam wa rahmatullah) or if one suffices with only (wa alayhi as-salam wa rahmatullah), then that is also permissible.

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) "We do not see" refers to Jibril (alayhis salam), who was visible to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) but was not visible to Aisha (radi Allahu anha). The same would occur during the state of revelation (wahy): the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would see the angel, but others could not see him.

(2) A non-mahram man may greet a non-mahram righteous woman with salam, provided there is no fear of any mischief. Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has established this issue by dedicating a chapter to it: [بَابُ تَسْلِیمِ الرِّجَالِ عَلیَ النِّسَاء وَالنِّسَاء عَلیٰ الرِّجَالِ ] It is narrated from Asma bint Yazid (radi Allahu anha) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed by us women and greeted us with salam. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Manners, Hadith: 5204) The opposite is also possible. Umm Hani (radi Allahu anha) states that she came to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) while he was performing a ritual bath (ghusl). She greeted him with salam. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Prayer, Hadith: 357)

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
Explanation: That is, this narration of Abu Salamah from Aisha is correct, and the narration of Urwah from Aisha is mistaken. The student of al-Zuhri, Ma'mar, has narrated this report via Urwah. The rest of the students—Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah, Yunus ibn Yazid al-Ayli, and Abdur Rahman ibn Khalid ibn Musafir—have narrated it from Abu Salamah. And this is what is preserved. This narration is also reported through a route other than al-Zuhri (through the route of Shu'bi), and in that as well, Abu Salamah is mentioned; therefore, this is what is preserved. And the narration of Ma'mar is not preserved. For details, see: (Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba, Sharh Sunan al-Nasa’i: 28/211)

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Umm al-Mu’minin, Sayyidah A’ishah al-Siddiqah radi Allahu anha, has the distinction that Jibril alayhis salam conveyed salam (greetings of peace) to her. This honor was not granted to other Companions radi Allahu anhum.

➋ Umm al-Mu’minin radi Allahu anha did not see the angels, nor did she hear their voices; therefore, in response, instead of saying (wa ‘alayki as-salam), she said (wa ‘alayhi as-salam).

➌ When someone conveys another’s salam to a person, the reply should be given in the same manner.
