بَابُ : كَرَاهِيَةِ الْبَوْلِ فِي الْجُحْرِChapter: That It Is Disliked To Urinate Into A Burrow In The Ground
Hadith 34

أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قال : أَنْبَأَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ، قال : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ ، أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قال : " لَا يَبُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي جُحْرٍ " . قَالُوا لِقَتَادَةَ : وَمَا يُكْرَهُ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ فِي الْجُحْرِ ؟ قَالَ : يُقَالُ : إِنَّهَا مَسَاكِنُ الْجِنِّ .
´It was narrated from Qatadah, from 'Abdullah bin Sarjis, that the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said:` "None of you should urinate into a burrow in the ground." They said to Qatadah: "Why is it disliked to urinate into a burrow in the ground?" He said: "It is said that these are dwelling-places of the jinn."

34. Commentary:
➊ The aforementioned narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, observational reality is that holes in the ground are the homes of insects, snakes, scorpions, and other harmful creatures. If one urinates in a hole, these creatures will come out. They will be unnecessarily harmed and, provoked, may harm the one urinating or someone else. Therefore, it has been prohibited.
➋ Hazrat Qatadah rahimahullah has described these holes as the homes of jinn, which clearly means that jinn also reside in such burrows.
➌ Generally, holes are narrow, and if one urinates in them, there is a strong possibility that the stream of urine will splash in different directions, causing droplets to scatter. This could also be a reason for the prohibition. And Allah knows best.

This narration is weak; however, caution dictates that one should not urinate in holes, because generally harmful creatures also reside in holes, and by urinating in them, harm may occur. Therefore, leaving open spaces and using a hole or burrow for urination is not an act of wisdom or intelligence.
