´Zainab bint Abi Salamah said:` "I heard 'Aisha, the wife of the Prophet say: 'Sahlah bint Suhail came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I see (displeasure) in the face of Abu Hudhaifah when Salim enters upon me.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'Breast-feed him.' She said: 'He has a beard.' He said: 'Breast-feed him, and that will take away (the displeasure) in the face of Abu Hudhaifah.' She said: 'By Allah, I never saw that on the face of Abu Hudhaifah after that.'"

1؎: Abu Hudhayfah was the husband of Sahla radi Allahu anha. He had adopted Salim as his son, and this was at a time when no verse had yet been revealed regarding adoption (tabanni). Then, when adoption was declared unlawful, Abu Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu disliked that Salim should enter his house as before. This was the difficulty for which Sahla came to the service of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to seek a solution.

Urdu Footnote: Hazrat Salim radi Allahu anhu had been adopted (as a son) by Hazrat Abu Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu. He used to live in the house and come and go like a son. When the command was revealed that an adopted son (mutabanna) does not actually become a real son, nor do the rulings of a son apply to him, then veiling (hijab) became obligatory from him. Therefore, the above-mentioned situation arose. Even now, wherever such a situation arises, according to Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha, Imam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah, Imam Shawkani rahimahullah, and others, there is allowance to act upon this. However, the fundamental principle is that the validity of suckling (rada‘ah) is only in childhood, that is, within the period of suckling. And Allah knows best.
