Urdu marginal note:
There are various wordings in the hadiths: [مَصَّةُ،إملاجة،خَطْفَة] and so on. All have the same meaning, that is, placing the breast in the mouth once and continuing to suckle milk until the breast is removed from the mouth. In some matters, the Shariah has made a distinction between a small amount and a large amount, such as little water (mā’ qalīl) and much water (mā’ kathīr). Similarly, in the issue of suckling (riḍā‘ah), there is also a distinction between a small and a large amount, in that a small amount is not considered valid until the act of drinking milk is properly established. This method is also in accordance with human nature.
