Hadith 3251

´Thabit Al-Bunani said:` "I was with Anas bin Malik and a daughter of his was with him. He said: 'A woman came to the Messenger of Allah and offered herself in marriage to him. She said: O Messenger of Allah, do you want to marry me?'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) It has been mentioned previously that during this period of migration, some women did not have any blood guardians (awliya) because their relatives remained upon disbelief. Therefore, they were compelled to speak about marriage themselves instead of through their guardians. In such circumstances, this is not something blameworthy. Due to being the supreme authority, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was their “wali.” Out of respect, they first presented the proposal to him; otherwise, their sole intention was marriage. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not accept such a proposal from any woman until her guardians themselves made the proposal. (2) If various proposals come and among them there is a religious (pious) proposal, then a woman may draw her guardians’ attention to it. In this, insha Allah, there is nothing lacking in modesty or immodesty; rather, it is the woman’s own inclination, which will be a means of benefit for her in this world and the Hereafter. (3) In every matter, the Hereafter should be given preference over the world.
