أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ أَبِي رِزْمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ , عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، عَنْ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : خَطَبْتُ امْرَأَةً عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَنَظَرْتَ إِلَيْهَا ؟ " قُلْتُ : لَا ، قَالَ : " فَانْظُرْ إِلَيْهَا ، فَإِنَّهُ أَجْدَرُ أَنْ يُؤْدَمَ بَيْنَكُمَا " .
´Narrated Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah:` It was narrated that Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah said: "I proposed marriage to a woman during the time of the Messenger of Allah, and the Prophet said: 'Have you seen her?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Look at her, for that is more likely to create love between you.'"

Tirmidhi — Hadith 1087
´Bakr bin Abdullah Al-Muzani narrated that :` Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah proposed to a woman, so the Prophet said: "Look at her, for indeed that is more likely to make things better between the two of you."

Explanation:

According to the majority of scholars, this ruling is recommended (mustahabb) and not obligatory (wajib). If someone sends a trustworthy female relative to inquire about a woman's appearance, habits, and characteristics, this is also permissible, just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Umm Sulaym (radi Allahu anha) to gather information about a woman.

Ibn Majah — Hadith 1866
´It was narrated that:` Mughirah bin Shubah said: “I came to the Prophet and told him of a woman to whom I had to propose marriage. He said: 'Go and look at her, for that is more likely to create love between you.' So I went to a woman among the Ansar and proposed marriage through her parents. I told them what the Prophet had said, and it was as if they did not like that. Then I heard that woman, behind her curtain, say: 'If the Messenger of Allah has told you to do that, then do it, otherwise I adjure you by Allah (not to do so)'. And it was as if she regarded that as a serious matter. So I looked at her and married her.” And he mentioned how well he got along with her.

Benefits and Issues:

➊
The parents did not dislike the Prophetic hadith itself; rather, what they disliked was that a non-related man should look at their young daughter.

A young unmarried girl should observe proper veiling (purdah).

A boy should only look at the girl whom he truly intends to marry.
It is a very bad thing to go around looking at people’s daughters under this pretext.
Allah, the Exalted, is aware of the thoughts in hearts; no one’s betrayal is hidden from Him.

The hearts of the male and female Companions (Sahabah and Sahabiyyat) held great respect for the Prophetic hadith. Thus, when the girl was informed of the instruction of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), she immediately agreed, even though, by her natural disposition, this matter was unpleasant for her.

From this, it is also understood how much importance the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) placed on the command of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
