´It was narrated from 'Uqbah bin 'Amir that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` "There are five things, whoever dies of any of them is a martyr. The one who is killed in the cause of Allah is a martyr; the one who dies of an abdominal complaint in the cause of Allah is a martyr; the one who dies of the plague in the cause of Allah is a martyr; and the woman who dies in childbirth in the cause of Allah is a martyr."

In this narration, the condition of "fi sabilillah" (in the way of Allah) has been specified for every martyr, whereas in other narrations this condition is not mentioned. Therefore, it is better to understand "fi sabilillah" in a general sense, meaning any Muslim, because every Muslim is a traveler on the path of Allah. However, the true martyr (shahid) is only the one who is killed while engaging in jihad. As for those who are called martyrs besides this, they are martyrs by ruling (hukman shahid), meaning that due to the extremely painful and sudden nature of their death, Allah ta'ala will forgive them and grant them the rank and reward of martyrs.
