Hadith 3140

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ , قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ غَزَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَمْ يَنْوِ إِلَّا عِقَالًا ، فَلَهُ مَا نَوَى " .
´It was narrated from Yahya bin Al-Walid bin 'Ubadah bin As-Samit that his grandfather said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever fights in the cause of Allah intending only to get an 'Iqal, he will have what he intended."
Brief Explanation
1؎ : Since his intention was not sincere, he will also be deprived of reward. A rope is an ordinary thing; if a person can be deprived of reward merely by intending to obtain it, then what will be the state of one who engages in religious work with the intention of acquiring something greater, and does not seek the pleasure of Allah!

Worldly Wealth: In the hadith, the word [عقال] has been used, which means the rope with which a camel’s knee is tied so that it does not run away. Obviously, that rope itself is not anyone’s objective. But in reality, worldly wealth and possessions, no matter how attractive they may seem, are as insignificant as that rope and are destined to perish. To express the insignificance of worldly wealth, it has been described as a rope; therefore, in the translation, the actual intent has been stated.
