Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
The above nine (9) hadiths convey the same subject matter with slight verbal differences. In some hadiths, the smoke of Hell is mentioned, and in others, the heat of Hell is mentioned. There is no contradiction between the two; smoke inherently contains heat. Similarly, in some narrations, the belly is mentioned, and in others, the nostrils. There is no disagreement here either, as these are interdependent. Greed itself is the origin of envy and miserliness. Likewise, in some narrations, the belly is mentioned, and in others, the heart. The intended meaning is the heart, and since the heart is located in the belly, sometimes the belly is mentioned. In narration number 3113, instead of the nostrils, the face is mentioned. Clearly, the nostrils are not separate from the face; whatever enters the nostrils must necessarily pass over the face. Thus, this is merely a verbal difference, while there is agreement in meaning and intent. This verbal difference is the result of the narrators’ discretion or oversight, because in reality, the narration is the same and the Companion of the Messenger who reports it is also the same, namely, Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu.
