´Narrated It was narrated from Ibn Abbas:` that Abdur-Rahman bin Awf and some of his companions came to the Prophet in Makkah and said: “O Messenger of Allah! We were respected when we were idolaters and when we believed, we were humiliated.” He said: “I have been commanded to pardon, so do not fight.” Then, when Allah caused us to move to Al-Madinah, He commanded us to fight, but they refrained. Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: Have you not seen those who were told to hold back their hands (from fighting) and perform As-Salah”

Commentary:
“They became humiliated”—that is, in the state of disbelief, we used to take revenge for oppression. Now, we are not permitted to raise our hands against oppression or to take revenge for it. And outwardly, this appears to be a state of humiliation, that a person remains a target for others. However, this ruling of the Shari‘ah was based on a great wisdom. If, at that time, Muslims had been permitted to resist or to retaliate, the nascent movement of Islam and its precious members would have been destroyed. Whereas, by commanding patience and forgiveness, their capacity for endurance was increased to the utmost degree, and they became capable of bearing the hardships of future battles to an astonishing extent, and their moral training also reached the highest level.
