Hadith 2959

´It was narrated from Saeed bin Jubair that Ibn Abbas said:` "Women used to circumambulate the Kabah naked, saying: 'Today some, or all of it will appear And whatever appers I don't make is permissible.' Then the following was revealed: 'O Children of Adam! Take your adornment to every Masjid.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Performing tawaf naked was either done as a vow or with the notion that since we have committed sins in these clothes, it is not appropriate to perform tawaf in them. Therefore, instead of their own clothes, they would perform tawaf in the clothes of the residents of the Haram (because they considered those garments sacred). If they could not obtain such clothes, they would perform tawaf naked under the cover of night or stealthily at noon, avoiding being seen. Along with this, they would verbally make the aforementioned announcement in the form of poetry so that if someone happened to come by, they would turn their face away and not look.

(2) “In every mosque” means that it is not only necessary to wear clothing for tawaf, but it is also obligatory to wear clothing during prayer. Since mosques are built specifically for prayer, the word “mosque” here alludes to prayer. In any case, being naked in a mosque is prohibited because it is against the sanctity of the mosque.

(3) In this blessed verse, the word “adornment” (zīnat) is used for clothing. Thus, during acts of worship, one should wear complete and clean clothing that truly serves as adornment and is covering, not something that exposes or highlights the private parts.

(4) From the word “adornment” (zīnat), it is also deduced that the head should be covered during prayer, because clothing becomes adornment only when the head is also covered. Moreover, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would generally keep his head covered, so covering the head during prayer is not only closer to the Sunnah, but in fact, keeping the head covered at all times and in every place is a recommended (masnun) practice.
