Hadith 2939

أَخْبَرَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ قَبَّلَ الْحَجَرَ وَالْتَزَمَهُ ، وَقَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِكَ حَفِيًّا " .
´It was narrated from Suwaid bin Ghafalah that Umar kissed the Black Stone and touched it, and said:` "I saw Abdu Al-Qasim paying attention to you.

Explanation & Benefits

(1) Placing the lips on the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) is Sunnah. If this is not possible, then touching it with the hand is Sunnah, and if even that is not possible, then touching it with any pure object held in the hand is Sunnah, and if even this is not possible, then merely gesturing towards it with the hand is also Sunnah.

(2) The speech of Umar radi Allahu anhu to the Black Stone was only for the purpose of letting people hear, or for the expression of his emotions, just as a person speaks to the deceased body of a loved one despite knowing that it cannot hear.
