Hadith 2924

´It was narrated that Ibn Abbas said:` "The Messenger of Allab passed by a man who was leading another man with something that he had stipulated in a vow. The Prophet took it and broke it, and he said: 'It is a vow.'" (Sahih) Chatper 136. It Is Permissible To Speak During Tawaf

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), people used to make strange and peculiar vows (nadhar) from which no one derived any benefit; rather, they were contrary to human dignity. For example: "I will perform Hajj on foot," "I will remain in the sun," "I will not cover my head," "I will not speak to anyone," "I will not wear shoes," "I will perform tawaf naked," and so on. Clearly, these are futile acts and, in fact, subject oneself to torment. These actions have no connection to the pleasure of Allah, rather, such acts invite the displeasure of Allah. Therefore, such vows should not be fulfilled; instead, expiation (kaffarah) should be given. (According to some Imams) the person mentioned in this hadith must have made a vow that he would perform tawaf with a nose-ring inserted. In this way, he became a spectacle for the people, and thus the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) expressed his displeasure.
