´It was narrated from Al-Bahzi that:` the Messenger of Allah set out for Makkah and was in Ihram. When they were in Ar-Rawha, they saw a wounded onager. Mention of that was made to the messenger of Allah and he said: "Leave it, for soon its owner will come." Then Al-Bahzi, who was its owner, came to the Messenger of Allah, it is up to you what you want to do with this onager." The Messenger of Allah Commanded Abu Bakr to share it out among the company then he moved on, and when he was in Al-Uthayah, between Ar-Ruwaythah and Al-Arj, They was a gazelle sleeping in the Shade with an arrow in it. It was said that the Messenger of Allah told a man to stand by it and not let anyone disturb it until everyone had passed by."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) "Bahz" refers to an individual from the tribe of Bahz. His name is Zayd bin Ka'b, and he is a Companion (radi Allahu anhu).
(2) "Wild donkey"—in reality, this is a wild cow, but because its hoof is curved like that of a donkey, due to this slight resemblance, it is called a wild donkey. Otherwise, in reality, it is not a donkey. That is why its consumption is permissible.
(3) "Do not say anything to it"—A person in the state of ihram (muhrim) is not permitted to hunt any animal, nor to capture or slaughter one that has been hunted. However, if a non-muhrim, of his own accord, hunts and even slaughters an animal and gives it to the muhrim, then he may eat it, as this Bahzi did. Otherwise, the animal should be left as it is, as happened later with the deer.
(4) Ruha is a place located thirty to forty miles from Madinah Munawwarah in the direction of Makkah Mukarramah. Similarly, other places such as Athayah, Ruwaythah, and 'Arj also come along the route to Makkah.
(5) "In the shade"—He was standing sheltered behind a hillock.
