1؎ : The summary of this discussion is that both Umar and Uthman (radi Allahu anhuma) held the opinion that there was a specific reason for which the people practiced tamattu‘ during the time of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and that now it is preferable not to do so. In contrast, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) was of the opinion that this itself is the Sunnah and is preferable (and Allah Ta‘ala knows best).
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
“You performed tamattu‘,” meaning he permitted it, or in the literal sense, he performed tamattu‘. The remaining details have already been mentioned previously. Due to the great status of Ali radi Allahu anhu and his natural gentleness, Uthman radi Allahu anhu did not compel him to follow his command; otherwise, during the era of Umar radi Allahu anhu, no one dared to oppose, as he too used to prohibit tamattu‘.
