Hadith 2639

´It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair said:` "A man from Khath'am came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'My father is an old man who cannot ride, and the command of Allah to perform Hajj has come. Will it be good enough if I perform Hajj on his behalf?' He said: 'Are you the oldest of his children?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Don't you think that if he owed a debt you would pay it off?, He' said: 'Yes.' He said: 'then perform Hajj on his behalf.'''(Daif)

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The researcher of the book has declared the mentioned narration to be weak in its chain of transmission, and has further written that its origin is authentic, from which it is understood that, according to him as well, the narration is correct in meaning. However, the preferred and correct opinion is that, apart from [اَنْتَ اَکْبَرُ وَلَدِہِ], the rest of the narration is authentic on the basis of corroborating reports. For details, see: (Al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 26/47, 48)

(2) For performing Hajj on behalf of another (Hajj badal), it is not necessary that only the eldest son does it; rather, any son, or even a brother, and in fact any general relative can perform Hajj badal. This is clearly understood from other narrations that have been mentioned on this subject. (For further discussions, see narrations: 2633, 2236)
