أَخْبَرَنَا
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا
ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ ، قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا
ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ ، عَنْ
سَعِيدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْقَارِظِيِّ ، عَنْ
إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ
عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنِ
ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلًا " , قُلْنَا : بَلَى ، يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , قَالَ : " رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِرَأْسِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، حَتَّى يَمُوتَ أَوْ يُقْتَلَ ، وَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَلِيهِ " , قُلْنَا : نَعَمْ ، يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , قَالَ : " رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي شِعْبٍ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ ، وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ ، وَيَعْتَزِلُ شُرُورَ النَّاسِ ، وَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ " , قُلْنَا : نَعَمْ ، يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , قَالَ : " الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ " .
´It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said:` "Shall I not tell you of the best of the people in status?" We said: "Yes. O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "A man who rides his horse in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until he dies or is killed. Shall I not tell you of the one who comes after him (in status)?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said; "A man who withdraws to a mountain pass and establishes Salah, and pays Zakah, and keeps away from the evil of people. Shall I not tell you of the worst of people?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "The one who asks for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, but does not give (when he is asked) for His sake,"

(1) "He takes his horse around." That is, he engages in jihad. Jihad in the path of Allah is, in general, the highest deed. And to live in seclusion in a mountain pass is only superior when the protection of religion is intended and it becomes extremely difficult to remain steadfast on religion while living among people; otherwise, living among people and enjoining good and forbidding evil (amr bil-ma'ruf wa nahi 'anil-munkar) is superior. Monasticism is not permitted.
(2) "From the evil of people." That is, he protects his religion, or it means that he does not cause harm to people. Protecting people from one's own evil is also a great virtue.
(3) [اَلَّذِیْ یَسْأَلُ بِاللّٰہِ] Kuyus'alu (passive) has also been recited, the translation of which would be: from whom it is asked in the name of Allah but he does not give. In the first meaning, two faults are combined: asking from people and not giving oneself, whereas in the second meaning, there is only one fault. The wording of the hadith accommodates both meanings. And Allah knows best.
