´It was narrated from Muadh:` That the Messenger of Allah sent him to Yemen, and he commanded him to take a Dinar, or its equivalent in Maafr,[1] from each person who had reached the age of puberty. And with regard to cattle, from every thirty a male or female Tabi '(two-year-old). And from every forty a Musinnah (three-year-old). (Daif)
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Since a large number of People of the Book resided in Yemen, jizyah was imposed upon them. "Jizyah" is the tax that a Muslim government collects from non-Muslim subjects in exchange for their protection and other facilities.
(2) "Ma‘afiri cloth." This was a specific type of cloth produced in Yemen. It was striped and considered among the best sheets for wearing. If someone could not pay the jizyah in the form of money, then something else of equivalent value to a dinar could also be given in its place.
(3) In the zakat of cows, the male and female are equal because both possess equal value due to their respective characteristics. The female gives birth, while the male performs important agricultural work, which the female is incapable of. This is unlike camels and goats, in which the females, besides giving birth and milk, are equal to the males in work, and thus the females are more valuable.
(4) If there are more than forty cows, then their shares will be divided into thirties and forties. For every thirty, a one-year-old calf (male or female) will be due as zakat, and for every forty, a two-year-old calf (male or female) will be due as zakat. For example: in sixty, two one-year-olds; in seventy, one two-year-old and one-year-old; in eighty, two-year-olds; in ninety, three one-year-olds; in one hundred, two one-year-olds and one two-year-old calf (male or female) will be due as zakat.

Benefits and Issues:
In zakat, fitrah, and other obligatory duties of the Shari‘ah, it is permissible, according to convenience, to give and take compensation or substitutes.
Just as here, permission has been granted to accept cloth in place of the amount of jizyah.
However, a group among the scholars of hadith insists on the payment being made in the original kind.

«أخرجه أبوداود، الخراج، باب في أخذ الجزية، حديث:3038، والترمذي، الزكاة، حديث:623، والنسائي، الزكاة، حديث:2452، وابن حبان (الإ حسان):7 /195، حديث4866، والحاكم:1 /398.»©Explanation:
➊ From this hadith, it is understood that the minimum annual amount of jizyah will be one dinar or any other thing equivalent to it per person.
This is the position of Imam Shafi'i rahimahullah.
Whereas Imam Ahmad rahimahullah holds that jizyah can only be one dinar or something equivalent to it; more or less than this cannot be collected as jizyah.
➋ This hadith also establishes that jizyah is to be taken only from adult, free men.
