Hadith 2375

أَخْبَرَنِي حَاجِبُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ عَطِيَّةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ صَامَ الْأَبَدَ فَلَا صَامَ " .
´It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever fasts every day of his life, then he has not fasted."'

English translation:
One should not observe more fasts than the fasts of Dawud (alayhis salam), because these are the most virtuous. If someone observes more than this, he will not attain any additional reward. If this happens occasionally in a month, that is a different matter, as the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would often fast in Sha'ban; however, to do so continuously is prohibited.
