´It was narrated from Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf that his father said:` "The one who fasts while traveling is like one who does not fast while a resident.' (Daif)
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
This narration is, at most, mawquf (i.e., a statement of a Companion). Furthermore, all three narrations are weak in terms of their chains of transmission, and from narration 2286 it is evident that even the identity of the one who made this statement is unknown. In any case, the meaning of this statement cannot be taken as contrary to the aforementioned marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) hadiths. That is, if fasting during travel causes extreme hardship such that the fasting person becomes unable to bear it and it becomes a source of difficulty for others, then it is not appropriate to fast while traveling; otherwise, it is permissible, as is established from the actions of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum). No statement can be interpreted in a way that contradicts an explicit hadith.
