Hadith 2194

´'Urwah bin Az-Zubair narrated that Aishah told him that:` the Messenger of Allah used to encourage the people to pray Qiyam in Ramadan, without insisting on that. He said: "Whoever spends the nights of Ramadan in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins." '

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) "Faith and reward." That is, the foundation of fasting should be faith, not merely following others, adhering to a custom, or seeking health benefits. And the intention should be to attain reward and to obey Allah Ta'ala, not to gain praise or to avoid people's criticism.

(2) "All previous sins." Provided that they are forgivable, meaning they are not related to the rights of others (huquq al-‘ibad) and do not involve shirk (associating partners with Allah), etc. And Allah knows best.

(3) The students of Imam Zuhri rahimahullah differ as to whether this hadith is mursal (with a missing link) or muttasil (connected)? Is it narrated from Aisha radi Allahu anha or from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu? Then, who is Zuhri's teacher—Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib, or ‘Urwah, or Abu Salamah? It is possible that it is all three. In any case, this does not affect the authenticity of the hadith.
