Hadith 2189

´It was narrated that 'Aishah said:` "The Messenger of Allah used to fast Sha`ban and Ramadan, and he made sure to fast on Mondays and Thursday."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
Urdu footnote:
“She could not make up (the fast).” Due to the risk that perhaps the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) might feel the need for us while we were fasting, because he used to visit the houses of all the noble wives (radi Allahu anhunna) every day after ‘Asr or at some other time. The matter of turns was only limited to the night; during the day, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) could go to any house.

Another narration mentions that the reason for fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, as stated by the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), is that on these two days the deeds of the servants are presented before Allah, and he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "I wish that when my deeds are presented, I am in a state of fasting." Benefits and Issues:
In light of various narrations, this statement of Aisha radi Allahu anha is either based on hyperbole, or the purpose is to indicate that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would sometimes fast at the beginning of the month, sometimes in the middle of the month, and sometimes at the end of the month, or the purpose is that he would rarely miss a day, otherwise, in general days, he would be fasting.

The month of Sha'ban is a month of virtue.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to fast abundantly in this month, and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that in this month the deeds of the servants are presented before Allah Ta'ala, and I wish that when my deeds are presented, I am in a state of fasting.
(Sunan an-Nasa'i, Book of Fasting, Hadith: 2359) Likewise, regarding the virtue of the fifteenth night of Sha'ban, there is a hadith that is authentic in its chain, in which he said: Allah Ta'ala forgives all people on this night except the one who associates partners with Him and the one who harbors hatred and malice.
(Majma' az-Zawa'id, 8/65; Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 5665; as-Sahihah, Hadith: 1144) Regarding fasting, it is narrated from him that he did not specify any particular day of the month of Sha'ban for fasting, rather he would fast most of the days of this month. Secondly, if someone worships on the fifteenth night with the intention that Allah Ta'ala forgives His servants on this night, then he may worship while taking care, as much as possible, of everyone's rights. However, it is not permissible to illuminate with lamps or candles on this night, nor to fast the next day specifically for this reason.

And Allah knows best.

Benefits and Issues:

The meaning of fasting the entire month of Sha’ban is to observe many voluntary fasts during Sha’ban, because it is narrated from Aisha radi Allahu anha herself that she said: I did not see the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam fast an entire month except Ramadan, and I did not see him fast in any month more than he did in Sha’ban (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Fasting, Chapter: Fasting in Sha’ban, Hadith: 1969).

It is better not to observe voluntary fasts after the middle of Sha’ban.
