´It was narrated that Anas said:` "The Messenger of Allah said, at the time of Sahur. 'O Anas, I want to fast, so give me something to eat.' So I brought him some dates and a vessel of water. That was after the Adhan of Bilal. He said: 'O Anas, find a man to come and eat with me.' So I called Zaid bin Thabit, who came and said: "I drank some Sawiq and I want to fast.' The Messenger of Allah said: "I also want to fast.' So he ate Sahr with him, then he got up and prayed two Rak'ahs, then he went out to the prayer."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The researcher of the book has declared the mentioned narration weak in terms of its chain of transmission, whereas according to other reliable scholars, it is considered authoritative due to some supporting evidences. For details, see (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 20/234, wa Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh Sunan al-Nasa’i: 20/376, 377, wa Sahih Sunan al-Nasa’i by al-Albani: 2/108, 109, no. 2166).
(2) Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) used to call the adhan (call to prayer) a few minutes before the appearance of dawn (fajr). The adhan for fajr was called by ‘Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum (radi Allahu anhu), as is explicitly mentioned in other ahadith. Therefore, one should not fall into the misconception that perhaps the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ate suhur (pre-dawn meal) after the fajr adhan. There is no mention of the second adhan in this hadith.
