´Zirr bin Hubaish said:` "I had Sahur with Hudhaifah, then we went out to pray. When we came to the Masjid we prayed two Rakahs, then the Iqamah for prayer was said, and there was only a short time between them." Abu Hurairah said : "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Eat Sahur, for in Sahur there is blessing."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) This narration is weak; if it is authentic, then by "day" is meant the "legal (shar‘i) day," which begins at the break of dawn (tulu‘ al-fajr). The intent of Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu is that the pre-dawn meal (suhur) should be eaten very close to the break of dawn so that the objectives of suhur are fully achieved. Eating suhur much earlier makes it difficult to maintain the fast, and if one falls asleep after suhur, then not only will the night prayer (tahajjud) be missed, but even the obligatory (fard) prayer may be missed.
(2) The word "sahri" (pre-dawn meal) is derived from "sahar," which means: the last part of the night. Therefore, suhur is specifically that which is eaten in the last part of the night, i.e., immediately before the break of dawn. Eating much earlier is considered a regular meal, not suhur.
