Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Eating suhur (pre-dawn meal) is recommended (mustahabb) because it makes it easier to observe the fast, helps maintain physical strength, and, furthermore, due to eating with the intention of fasting, there is also reward—so it is both nourishment and reward. However, it is neither obligatory (wajib) nor a condition (shart) for the fast; rather, it is superior (afdal) because it is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Also, the distinction between our fasts and those of the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab) is precisely due to suhur. Because of suhur, the intention (niyyah) for fasting will be made at the proper time, and there will be an opportunity to wake up at dawn, which is the time for supplication (du'a) and the night prayer (tahajjud). In short, there are many worldly and otherworldly benefits. The meaning of "blessing" (barakah) refers to all of these.

(2) The use of the word "blessing" (barakah) also indicates that suhur is not obligatory, but recommended (mustahabb).
