´it was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet stood at the well of Badr and said:` "Have you found what your Lord promised to be true?" he said: "They can hear what I am saying to them now". Mention of that was made to 'Aishah and she said: "Ibn 'Umar is mistaken. Rather the Messenger of Allah said: "Ibn 'Umar is mistaken. Rather the Messenger of Allah said: 'Now they know that what I used to say to them is the truth.' Then she recited: So verily, you (O Muhammad) cannot make the dead to hear., until she recited the verse."

English Translation:
The discussion on the above-mentioned interpretation (ta’wil) by Aisha (radi Allahu anha) has already passed under Hadith number 2076, along with a brief investigation of this issue. As for Aisha’s (radi Allahu anha) reasoning from the mentioned verse, the answer is that the negation is regarding your (the Prophet’s) making them hear, not Allah’s making them hear: “Indeed, Allah makes whom He wills hear” []. And Allah, the Exalted, made them hear your words. Furthermore, the explicit statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding their hearing was a temporary hearing, as the restriction of “now” (al-aan) comes in the ahadith. Certainly, this was a miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). In any case, the issue of the dead hearing (sama‘ al-mawta) is a matter under discussion. One group among the scholars affirms the hearing of the dead, while another does not. Some researchers are moderate, as has been mentioned in the benefits of Hadith number 2076. However, it should be remembered that affirming the hearing of the dead does not at all mean that it is permissible to call upon them in worship, because even in needs, it is not permissible to call upon the living—who, according to everyone, can hear—so how could it be permissible to call upon the dead? And Allah knows best.
