´It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet said:` "When one of you dies he is shown his place morning and evening. If he is one of the people of paradise them he is one of the people of Paradise, and if he is one of the people of Hell, then he is one of the people of Hell, until Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, raises him up on the Day of Resurrection."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
The relevance of this hadith of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu to the chapter is not clear, because it does not mention placing sticks on the grave. It is possible that the chapter heading was omitted by the copyists. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established the following chapter for this hadith in Sahih Bukhari: [باب: المیت یعرض علیه مقعدہ بالغداة والعشي] "The (eternal) abode of the deceased is presented to him morning and evening."

Hadith Commentary:
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states that this is a most explicit proof that Paradise and Hellfire exist at this very moment, and that their inhabitants are shown them daily; full entry will take place on the Day of Resurrection.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states:
The aforementioned hadith is clear evidence that Paradise and Hell are presently existent, and their inhabitants are shown them every morning and evening.
Complete entry into Paradise and Hell will, however, occur on the Day of Resurrection after the reckoning.
In one narration it is stated:
“…until he is raised up on the Day of Resurrection.”
(Fath al-Bari: 6/389)

Regarding Pharaoh and the people of Pharaoh, the Noble Qur’an explicitly states:
“They are exposed to the Fire morning and evening, and on the Day the Hour will be established, it will be said: ‘Admit the people of Pharaoh to the severest punishment.’”

Hadith Commentary: Among the severities of death is also this severity: that morning and evening, the person is shown his abode, thereby causing him distress. However, for the righteous servants, there is gladness, as they receive the glad tidings of Paradise.

Hadith Commentary:
Both the believer and the disbeliever are shown Paradise and Hell.
In the grave, both of them see these at the same time.
The benefit of this is that the believer becomes extremely happy, while the disbeliever becomes extremely sorrowful.
Among the hardships of death, one hardship is also that morning and evening, his abode is shown to him, causing him to be afflicted with grief and distress; however, for the righteous servant, there is happiness, as he receives the glad tidings of Paradise.

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning is that if the person is destined for Paradise, then morning and evening Paradise is presented before him, and he is given reassurance that when he rises from this grave, his final abode will be this Paradise. Similarly, the one destined for Hell is shown Hell so that he remains aware of his ultimate end.
It is possible that this presentation is only to the soul, and it is also possible that it is to both the soul and the body.
By "morning and evening," what is meant are their respective times, even though in the realm of Barzakh there is neither morning nor evening. "And it is possible to say that the benefit of this presentation for them is to give glad tidings to their souls of their settling in Paradise together with their bodies." (Fath)
That is, the benefit of this presentation for the believer is to give glad tidings to their souls that their final place of settlement, along with their bodies, is Paradise.
Similarly, to frighten the denizens of Hell that their final abode, along with their bodies, is Hell.
Another form of the punishment and reward in the grave is that for the person destined for Paradise, a window is opened towards Paradise, from which he continues to receive the freshness of Paradise, and for the person destined for Hell, a window is opened towards Hell, from which he continues to receive the hot winds of Hell.
Morning and evening, through these very windows, they are shown complete views of Paradise and Hell.
O Allah! By Your grace and generosity, grant the publisher of Bukhari Sharif with Urdu translation, his parents, teachers, all the noble assistants, and esteemed readers the freshness from Paradise in their graves, admit them to Paradise on the Day of Resurrection, and protect all of us from Hell.
Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
By "morning and evening" is not meant, in reality, the actual morning and evening, because in the realm of Barzakh there is no concept of morning and evening. Rather, its meaning is according to our reckoning of morning and evening times.
And the benefit of this presentation is to give glad tidings to the souls of the believers that their final abode, along with their bodies, is Paradise and its delights; and to warn the inhabitants of Hell that their final abode, along with their bodies, is Hell.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/308) (2)
The form of punishment and reward in the grave will be such that for the person destined for Paradise, a window will be opened towards Paradise, from which the freshness of Paradise will continue to reach him; and for the person destined for Hell, a window will be opened towards Hell, from which the hot winds of Hell will continue to scorch him.
It is possible that this presentation is upon his soul, and it is also possible that it is upon both his body and soul.
And Allah knows best.
O Noble Lord! By Your grace and kindness, grant steadfastness in the time of questioning in the grave to the translator, publisher, reviewers, their parents and helpers, and all the readers, and grant them the freshness from Paradise. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, grant them a place in Jannat al-Firdaws in the company of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Amin ya Rabb al-alamin.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: In the grave, morning and evening (daily), the joy and happiness that the people of Paradise will experience by seeing their place, and the grief and distress that the people of Hell will feel by seeing their place—there is no way to estimate this in this world, nor is it possible for us to know its reality, because it pertains to a realm (Barzakh) which we have not witnessed.

Explanation: 1:
In numerous other authentic hadiths of this kind, there is a complete refutation of those who deny the punishment of the grave. If such people judge the conditions of the Barzakh (the intermediary realm after death) by their own intellects and make their intellects the standard for religion, then there are dozens of such issues related to matters of faith in the pure Shari‘ah that human intellect can never comprehend. So, was the path of the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the pious predecessors (salaf salihin) the same as the one adopted by “people of such intellect”?

Urdu marginal note:
This statement is addressed to every deceased person destined for Paradise and Hell. Here, only the one destined for Hell is mentioned. This is probably an abridgment by a narrator; otherwise, in other narrations, both the people of Paradise and the people of Hell are mentioned. The relevance of this hadith to the chapter is also not clear, because in this too, the mention of placing sticks is absent.

"This is your abode" is an indication towards the actual abode, meaning your real abode is indeed this (which is being presented), but for the time being, you cannot enter it.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
The connection that the grave has with Paradise and Hell is such that, due to it, the deceased continuously receives the breeze of either Paradise or Hell. To a certain extent, comfort or punishment is also continuously experienced, but twice a day, he is also shown his house in Paradise or Hell. This is so that his happiness or grief may further increase.
➋
"This is your abode"—in this, the indication is towards the grave. That is, you will remain in this grave until the Day of Resurrection, and then you will reach that abode which has been shown to you. It is also possible that the indication is towards that eternal abode which is shown to him. That is, until the Day of Resurrection, he is shown his place in Paradise or Hell daily, and it is said to him that on the Day of Resurrection, you will reach this place.

Takhrij al-Hadith: [وأخرجه البخاري 1379، ومسلم 2866، دارلسلام 7211 من حديث مالك به]
Jurisprudential Points:
➊ The punishment of the grave and the reward of the grave are true.
➋ In being shown both abodes, there is mercy and blessing for the believer, and punishment for the disbeliever, hypocrite, and sinner.
➌ Even if the body perishes, the soul does not perish.
➍ This hadith is evidence that both Paradise and Hell are (created) creatures, as is the position of Ahl al-Sunnah. [التمهيد 14/105]
As for the people of innovation who say that Paradise and Hell have not yet been created and will be created at the time of the Resurrection, this statement is incorrect and false.
➎ The life of Barzakh after death and being resurrected on the Day of Judgment are true.
