´It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet heard a sound from a grave and said:` "When died this man die?" They said: "he died during the Jahiliyyah." So he was delighted and said: "Were it not that you would not bury one another, I would have prayed to Allah to make you hear the torment of the grave."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) In this narration, the punishment of the grave refers to another meaning, that is, the punishment inflicted due to sins.
(2) “He was pleased” means that the buried person was not a Muslim. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would be distressed if a Muslim were to be punished. The meaning of being pleased here is the absence of distress and the end of worry; otherwise, how could the Noble, Kind, and Merciful Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) be pleased at someone being punished?
(3) “You will not bury (him)”—the fear of the punishment of the grave indicates that the punishment of the grave does not begin before burial. However, for those who are not buried, their punishment begins immediately upon death. And the “grave” for them refers to that place which their body or soul attains after death in this world and the Hereafter (Barzakh). And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Powerful. (For details on the punishment of the grave, see Hadith: 2052)
