Hadith 2024

´It was narrated from Yazid bin Thabit that:` they went out with the Messenger of Allah one day and he saw a new grave. He said: "What is this?" They said: "This is so-and-so, the freed slave woman of Banu so-and-so" - whom Messenger of Allah knew - "She died at midday and we did not like to wake you up when you were fasting and taking a nap." The Messenger of Allah stood (for prayer) and the people formed rows behind him. He said four Takbirs over her then he said: "If anyone among you dies while I am still among you, inform me, for my prayer for his is a mercy."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
If a deceased person is buried without the funeral prayer (janazah) having been performed, then in this case, performing the funeral prayer at the grave is an issue upon which there is consensus. However, performing the funeral prayer at the grave for a deceased person who was buried along with the funeral prayer is a matter of scholarly disagreement. This hadith is evidence for its permissibility. Those who hold the view of impermissibility consider this to be something specific to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, but every action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is evidence for its general legislation unless there is evidence for specification, and here there is no evidence for specification. Furthermore, the Companions standing alongside him goes against the idea of specification, although it can be said that the Companions stood by way of following him. In any case, permissibility is established. For further details, see hadith: 1971.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to look after all his Companions, even if someone appeared to be of seemingly minor status. A leader and head should have such a relationship with his workers.

➋ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) considered the comfort of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and did not deem it appropriate to cause him any inconvenience. The young should likewise be considerate of their elders.

➌ The method of performing the funeral prayer (janazah) at the grave is the same as the method of performing the funeral prayer before burial.
