أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ، قال : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قال : " جُعِلَ تَحْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ دُفِنَ قَطِيفَةٌ حَمْرَاءُ " .
´It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said:` "When the Messenger of Allah was buried, a red velvet cloak was placed beneath him."

The Sunnah shroud consists of three garments only. Nowadays, practice is also upon this. However, if an additional sheet is spread underneath, then according to this hadith, it is permissible. For further details, see: (Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh Sunan an-Nasa’i: 19/364–369)
