Hadith 1991

´It was narrated that Abu Umamah said:` "The Sunnah, when offering the funeral prayer, is to recite Umm Al-Qur'an) the Exxence of the Qur'an) quietly in the first Takbir, Then to say three (more) Takbir and to say the Taslim after the last one."

Brief Explanation
1؎: Abu Umamah is well-known by this kunyah; his name is As‘ad or Sa‘d, son of Sa‘d ibn Hanif al-Ansari. He is counted among the Companions (Sahabah); he had the honor of seeing the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but he did not hear hadiths directly from him. Therefore, this hadith is among the mursal (transmitted with a missing link) narrations of the Companions, and it is reliable, because a Companion heard it from another Companion, and the latter narrated it from the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The intermediary is a trustworthy narrator, i.e., a Companion, so there is no problem. In other chains, the mention of the intermediary is established, as in the following hadith this narration is coming from Dahhak ibn Qays (radi Allahu anhu). (For further details, see: Ahkam al-Jana’iz by al-Albani: section no. 74, hadith no. 5.) Imam al-Zuhri narrated this hadith from Abu Umamah, and the imams have authenticated it. Imam Tahawi, in his extraction of this hadith, has added that al-Zuhri mentioned this hadith of Abu Umamah to Muhammad ibn Suwayd al-Fihri, upon which Ibn Suwayd said: I heard it from Dahhak ibn Qays (radi Allahu anhu), who narrates it regarding the funeral prayer from Habib ibn Maslamah, and it is just like the hadith which Abu Umamah narrated to you. (Tahawi 1/288) Further ahead, al-Nasa’i has narrated it with a sahih (authentic) chain, marfu‘an (ascribed to the Prophet), from Dahhak, and with Tahawi, Dahhak narrates it from Habib ibn Maslamah. It should be noted that both of these are among the younger Companions.
Explanation & Benefits

1991. Commentary:

➊ The narrator of the hadith, Abu Umamah radi Allahu anhu, is a well-known Companion of the Messenger, but he is not Abu Umamah Bahili; rather, he is another Companion who is also known by this kunyah. He was granted the honor of seeing the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, although he did not directly hear any hadith from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. This narration too, he received through another Companion, but he reported it without mentioning the intermediary. According to the hadith scholars, this is called a "mursal sahabi" (a Companion's mursal narration), and it is considered authoritative. It is given the same ruling as a marfu‘ (attributed directly to the Prophet) narration. For further details, see: (Ta‘liq Ahkam al-Jana’iz by al-Albani, p. 141).

➋ "Recite Surah al-Fatihah quietly"—whereas in the previous hadith number 1989, recitation aloud is explicitly mentioned. Therefore, both ways are permissible: one may recite quietly or aloud.

➌ "Then say three takbirs"—the narration is concise, meaning the three takbirs are not to be said together, but rather, all together they will be three, i.e., said separately. After the second takbir, send blessings (salat) upon the Prophet, after the third, supplicate (make du‘a), and after the fourth, say the salam, as has already been detailed in hadith 1985, benefit 4.
