Hadith 1987

´It was narrated from 'Amr bin Maimun from "Abdullah bin Rubayy'ah As-Sulami, who was also one of the Companions of Allah's Messenger from 'Ubaid bin Khalid As-Sulami, that:` the Messenger of Allah established the bond of brotherhood between two men. One of them was killed and the other died after him. We offered the funeral prayer for him, and the Prophet said: "What did you say?" They said: "O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him; O Allah, join him with his companion." The Prophet said: "Where is his Salah in comparison to his companion's Salah? Where are his deeds in comparison to his companion's deeds? Indeed the difference between heaven and Earth." (One of narrators) 'Amr bin Maimun Said: "I was happy with that because he raised it for me."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1987. Commentary:

➊ In this narration, the teacher of Hazrat Amr ibn Maymun is a Companion (Sahabi), and he is narrating from another Companion. If one Companion does not mention the intermediary of another Companion, the reliability of the narration’s chain (isnad) is not weakened; however, mentioning the intermediary is preferable. This is why Hazrat Amr ibn Maymun expressed his happiness regarding this narration.

➋ Thus, in the funeral prayer, one should make a general supplication for forgiveness and elevation of ranks. Referring to a specific personality or attributing something to them is not appropriate, because the true status of every person is known only to Allah Ta’ala. However, reference to qualities can be made, such as: “O Allah! Join him with the martyrs (shuhada) and the righteous (salihin),” etc.

➌ A long life filled with righteous deeds (a‘mal salihah) is a blessing for a Muslim person.

➍ Due to an increase in humility, submission, sincerity, and piety (taqwa), sometimes a person, even if he passes away on his bed, attains a rank equal to or higher than that of a martyr (shaheed).

Benefits and Issues:
Life is an extremely precious possession.
Every moment that passes, a person is either elevating his status with Allah or lowering it.
The martyr (shaheed) has a special rank and status.
However, some who are not martyrs (ghayr-shuhada) will attain lofty ranks due to their sincerity (ikhlas), piety (taqwa), and abundance of deeds.
For example, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu is the most superior in the Ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
Even though he was not honored with the distinction of martyrdom (shahadah).
