أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ، قال : أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قال : أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، قال : سَمِعْتُ نَافِعًا يَزْعُمُ ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ " صَلَّى عَلَى تِسْعِ جَنَائِزَ جَمِيعًا فَجَعَلَ الرِّجَالَ يَلُونَ الْإِمَامَ وَالنِّسَاءَ يَلِينَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَصَفَّهُنَّ صَفًّا وَاحِدًا ، وَوُضِعَتْ جَنَازَةُ أُمِّ كُلْثُومِ بِنْتِ عَلِيٍّ امْرَأَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ وَابْنٍ لَهَا يُقَالُ لَهُ زَيْدٌ ، وُضِعَا جَمِيعًا وَالْإِمَامُ يَوْمَئِذٍ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْعَاصِ ، وَفِي النَّاسِ ابْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ ، وَأَبُو قَتَادَةَ فَوُضِعَ الْغُلَامُ مِمَّا يَلِي الْإِمَامَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : فَأَنْكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، وَأَبِي قَتَادَةَ , فَقُلْتُ : مَا هَذَا ؟ قَالُوا : هِيَ السُّنَّةُ " .
´Ibn Juraij said:` "I heard Naji, claim that Ibn 'Umar offered the funeral prayer for nine together. He put the men closer to the Imam and the women closer to the Qiblah, and he placed them (the women) in one row. And the body of Umm Kulthum bint 'Ali the wife of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, and a son of hers called Zaid were placed together. The Imam that day was Saeed bin Al-As and among the people were Ibn 'Umar, Abu Hurairah, Abu Saeed and Abu Qatadah. The boy was placed closer to the Imam. A man said something objecting to that, so I looked at Ibn 'Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Abu Saeed and Abu Qatadah and said: 'What is this?' They said: 'It is the Sunnah."

The Year of Death of Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu
Some people claim that Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu passed away during the era of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu. In refutation of these people, the statements of the majority of hadith scholars and irrefutable proofs are presented here, from which it is established that Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu passed away long after the death of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, in the year 54 AH.
Sh2 A Magnificent Proof Eh2 ◈ Imam Nafi‘ (Tabi‘i) rahimahullah narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma led the funeral prayer of Umm Kulthum bint Ali radi Allahu anha, and among the people present were Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id and Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhum. إلخ [سنن النسائي 72، 71/4 ح 1980 و سنده صحيح، مصنف عبدالرزاق 465/3 ح 6337 و سنده صحيح، منتقي ابن الجارود : 545]

9: Abu Ahmad al-Hakim said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [تاريخ دمشق 107/71]
10: Tirmidhi rahimahullah said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [تهذيب السنن لابن القيم مع عون المعبود 422/2]
11: Abu Abdullah ibn Mandah al-Hafiz said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [ايضا 422/2ومعرفة السنن و الآثار 558/1]
12: Imam Bayhaqi rahimahullah said: There is consensus among the historians (in the time of Imam Bayhaqi) that Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [معرفة السنن والآثار 558/1 قبل ح 787]
13: Dhahabi said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [تجريد اسماء الصحابة 194/2، الاعلام بوفيات الاعلام 37/1 ت 131]
14: Ibn Kathir mentioned him among those who died in 54 AH. [البدايه و النهايه 70/8]
15: Ibn Hibban said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. إلخ [الثقات 74/3]
16: Khalifah ibn Khayyat said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [تاريخ خليفه بن خياط ص 223]
17: Imam Bukhari rahimahullah mentioned him among those who died between 50 AH and 60 AH. [التاريخ الصغير 131/1]
18: Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [تقريب التهذيب : 8311]
19: Ibn al-Jawzi said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [المنتظم 268/5]
20: Ibn al-‘Imad al-Hanbali said: He radi Allahu anhu passed away in 54 AH. [شذرات الذهب 60/1]
21: ‘Ayni al-Hanafi said: He radi Allahu anhu (according to one opinion) passed away in 54 AH. [عمدة القاري 294/2 ح 153 باب النهي عن الاستنجاء باليمين]
SA In opposition to this vast multitude and the majority, Habibullah Derwi Deobandi Hayati has transmitted from Huthaym ibn ‘Adi (a liar) that (Sayyiduna) Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu passed away in 38 AH [نور الصباح ص 207] Hanbal ibn Ishaq said: I have come to know that he radi Allahu anhu passed away in 38 AH [تاريخ بغداد 161/1] EA ↰ These statements are rejected due to their opposition to the majority.
◈ For criticism of Huthaym ibn ‘Adi «كذاب» see Mizān al-I‘tidāl [324/4 ت 9311] and the general books of al-Majruhīn.
◈ Imam Yahya ibn Ma‘in said: «كوفي، ليس بثقة، كذاب» [الجرح و التعديل 75/9و سنده صحيح]
The Year of Death of Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu
Some people claim that Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu passed away during the era of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu. 1980. Commentary: When a Companion (sahabi) refers to an action as Sunnah or prescribed (masnun), what is meant by this is the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself.
