´Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunaif said:` "A poor woman in Al-Awali fell sick and the Prophet used to ask them about her. He said: 'If she dies, do not bury her until I have offered the funeral prayer for her. She died and they brought her to Al-Madinah after dark, and they found that the Messenger of Allah had gone to sleep. They did not like to wake him up, so they offered the funeral prayer for her and buried her in Baqi' Al-Gharqab. The next morning they came and the Messenger of Allah asked them about her. They said: 'She has been buried, O Messenger of Allah. We came to you and found you sleeping, and we did not like to wake you up.' He said: 'let's go.' He set out walking and they went with him and showed him her grave. The Messenger of Allah stood and they formed rows behind him, and he offered the funeral prayer for her, saying the Takbir four times."
Explanation & Benefits

1971. Commentary:
➊ This woman was Umm Mihjan radi Allahu anha. She had a special devotion to cleaning the mosque. In her honor, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made the above statement.
➋ "She was buried"—from this, one can gauge the extent of respect the Companions had in their hearts for the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, to the point that they disliked waking him or considered it disrespectful. As for his instruction, they interpreted it as a general directive, not a specific command; that is why he did not express displeasure with them afterward.
➌ "He said four takbirs"—the intent here is that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) in the proper manner, not merely supplicated; otherwise, the word "salla" could also mean supplication (du'a).
➍ The purpose of Imam al-Nasa'i rahimahullah in citing this hadith is to show that the Companions radi Allahu anhum performed her funeral prayer at night, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not object to this.
➎ This hadith shows that the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) can be performed at the grave, even if the deceased has already been buried after the funeral prayer. Furthermore, those who participated in the first funeral prayer may also join in the second; otherwise, the Companions would have stood apart. It is thus clear that repeating the funeral prayer is not something exclusive to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

1908. Commentary:
➊ Along with the issue established by the chapter, it is also proven that the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) can be performed again at the grave. The Hanafis do not accept performing the funeral prayer again or at the grave, except in the case where the deceased was buried without the funeral prayer being performed. They consider this hadith to be specific to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) without evidence.
➋ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) possessed the utmost humility, such that he would go to the homes of the poor and needy to visit them and inquire about their health... (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)...
➌ A man may tend to a sick woman, and likewise, a woman may tend to a sick man.
➍ Such disobedience in which the intention of the one giving the order is the well-being, honor, and respect of the other, will not be counted as a sin.
➎ The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not possess knowledge of the unseen (ghayb).
➏ It is permissible to bury at night.

1983. Commentary: "When he passes away"—It is as if, through revelation or from his condition, you had become certain of his impending death. That is why you used the word "when" instead of "if," which indicates certainty. Further details of this hadith have already been mentioned nearby in hadith number 1971.
