´It was narrated that 'Umar bin Al-Khattab said:` "When 'Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Soul died, the Messenger of Allah was called upon to offer the funeral prayer for him. When the Messenger of Allah stood up (to offer the prayer), I got up quickly and said: 'O Messenger of Allah Are you going to pray for Ibn Ubayy when he said such-and-such an occasion?' And I stated to list all the things that he had said. The Messenger of Allah smiled and said: 'Leave me alone, O 'Umar.' When I spoke too much he said: 'I have been given the choice and I have chosen (to offer the prayer for him). If I knew that he could be forgiven by asking Allah's forgiveness more than seventy times, I would have done so.' The Messenger of Allah offered the funeral prayer for him, and then left. A short while later, the two Verses form surah Bara were revealed: 'And never pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were rebellious.' Later I was astonished by my audacity toward the Messenger of Allah on that day. And Allah and His Messenger know best."

1968. Commentary:
➊ For understanding this hadith, refer to the benefits of hadith: 1901. Further points are as follows.
➋ "Salul" was his mother's name. She was a well-known woman, which is why he was also attributed to her.
➌ "Do not perform the funeral prayer"—here, the hypocrite refers to one who is a hypocrite in belief, that is, one who has not truly believed in his heart, whose heart contains disbelief. He has uttered the testimony (kalimah) only with his tongue (to deceive). And no one except Allah Ta'ala can know this, unless Allah Ta'ala reveals it through revelation, and this was only possible during the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Today, we cannot call anyone a hypocrite (in this sense). The presence of signs of hypocrisy does not make a person a hypocrite in belief; rather, he becomes a practical hypocrite, meaning he appears like the hypocrites, but the reality is known only to Allah Ta'ala. Therefore, now the funeral prayer of every Muslim who professes the testimony will be performed. To some extent, the signs of hypocrisy are found in everyone. And Allah knows best.
➍ "He was astonished"—in reality, this courage was also granted to him by Allah Ta'ala, otherwise Umar (radi Allahu anhu) would not have dared to utter a word in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) on his own accord. Several incidents indicate this. And in this courage too, there were many hidden wisdoms of Allah Ta'ala.
