Hadith 1964

´It was narrated that Jabir said:` "The Prophet would not pray for a man who owed a debt. A deceased person was brought to him and he said: 'Does he owe any debt?' They said: 'Yes, he owes two Dinars.' He said: 'Pray for your companion.' Abu Qatadah said: 'I will pay them, O Messenger of Alllah, So he prayed for him. Then, when Allah made His Messenger rich though conquest, he said: ' I am closer to each believer than his own self. Whoever leaves behind a debt, I will pay it, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his heirs."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ By (ḍiyāʿan) is meant those individuals who require care to fulfill their needs, such as: small children, the elderly, and disabled persons who are unable to provide for their own livelihood.

➋ The Islamic state is a welfare state in which special attention is given to the poor and destitute.

➌ The relationship of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) with the Ummah is stronger, more important, and greater than all other relationships. Just as it is obligatory upon every individual of the Ummah to love the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), to respect him, and to obey him, likewise the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also cared for every individual of the Ummah. Now this obligation falls upon Muslim rulers that they should give precedence to the benefit and needs of the public—especially the deserving individuals—over their own personal needs and interests.
