Hadith 196

أَخْبَرَنَا كَثِيرُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ ، عَنْ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ ، أَنَّ أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ كَلَّمَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَائِشَةُ جَالِسَةٌ ، فَقَالَتْ لَهُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ ، أَرَأَيْتَ الْمَرْأَةَ تَرَى فِي النَّوْمِ مَا يَرَى الرَّجُلُ ، أَفَتَغْتَسِلُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ؟ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَعَمْ " ، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : فَقُلْتُ لَهَا : أُفٍّ لَكِ ، أَوَ تَرَى الْمَرْأَةُ ذَلِكَ ؟ فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " تَرِبَتْ يَمِينُكِ ، فَمِنْ أَيْنَ يَكُونُ الشَّبَهُ " .
´It was narrated from 'Urwah that 'Aishah told him that Umm Sulaim spoke to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when 'Aishah was sitting there. She said to him:` "O Messenger of Allah! Allah is not shy to tell the truth. Inform me: if a women sees in a dream what men see should she perform Ghusl from that?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to her: "Yes." 'Aishah said: "I expressed my displeasure and said: 'Does a woman see that?' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) turned to me and said: 'May your right hand be covered with dust! How else would (her child) resemble her?'"

196. Commentary:

«أف لک» Lady Aisha radi Allahu anha would not have known about this matter, nor would she have experienced it herself. In any case, women experience nocturnal emission (ihtilam) very rarely, and especially the emission of semen (mani) in a dream is extremely uncommon.

«تَرِبَتْ يَمِينُكِ» "May your hands be dust-covered." In terms of meaning, this is indeed a supplication (of harm). However, the Arabs used this and similar idiomatic expressions, such as: «قاتلہ اللہ ، ما أشجعہ ، لا أم لہ ، تکلتک امک», etc. And they did not intend their literal meanings; rather, they would use them to express denial of something, to censure it, to encourage towards it, or to express amazement. «فَمِنْ أَيْنَ يَكُونُ الشَّبَهُ» Here, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam presented a rational argument: if a woman does not experience ejaculation (inzal) and her fluid is not emitted, then how does resemblance to her appear in the child? Whereas, many children do indeed resemble their mothers greatly.
