Hadith 1928

‘Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir says that’ Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) was sitting when a funeral procession passed by, so the people stood up until the funeral had passed. Then Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A Jewish funeral once passed by, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting on that same path, and he disliked that a Jewish funeral should pass above his head, so he stood up 1.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1928. Commentary: This narration is different from the previous narrations. In those, Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) is shown to be an advocate and practitioner of standing, whereas in this narration, he holds the opposite view. Due to their abundance, those narrations will be given preference. Furthermore, it is Hasan’s (radi Allahu anhu) own opinion that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stood up for this reason, whereas the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself has mentioned other reasons. In hadith 1922, he said: “Is it not a soul?” (), and in hadith number 1923, he said: “Indeed, death is a terrifying thing.” (). And in hadith 1931, it is coming that: “We stood up out of respect for the angels.” (). It is clear that the reasons stated by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) are authoritative, not the personal opinion of Hasan (radi Allahu anhu). Even if this reason is also accepted, the aforementioned reasons still remain valid. Therefore, the correct view is that upon seeing a funeral procession, one should stand; this is superior and recommended (mustahabb), although there is also allowance for remaining seated. And Allah knows best.
