´It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah bin 'Atik that 'Atik bin Al-Harith who was the grandfather of 'Abdullah bin 'Abdullah, his mother's fathr told him that the Jabir bin "Atik told him that:` the Prophet came to visit 'Abdullah bin Thabit (when he was sick) and found him very close to death. He called out to him and he did not respond, so the Messenger of Allah said: "Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return," and said: "We wanted you to live but we were overtaken by the decree of Allah, O Abu Ar-Rabi." The women screamed and wept, and Ibn "Atik started telling them to quiet. The Messenger of Allah said: "Leave them; when the inevitable comes, no one should weep." They said: "What is the inevitable, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Death." His daughter said: "I had hoped that you would become a martyr, for you had prepared yourself for it." The Messenger of Allah said: "Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has rewarded him according to his intention. What do you think martyrdom is?" They said: "Being killed for the sake of Allah." The Messenger of Allah said: "Martyrdom is of seven types besides being killed for the sake of Allah. The one who dies of the plague is a martyr; the one who is crushed by a falling building is a martyr; the one who is crusheds by a falling building is a martyr; the one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr; the one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr; the one who is burned to death is a martyr, and the woman who dies in pregnancy is a martyr."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1847. Commentary:
➊ "When he dies, then no one should weep," because wailing and lamentation occur after death, not before. Therefore, the family members may cry at the time of someone's death, because crying is not prohibited; rather, wailing (noha) and complaining are prohibited, which only occur after death.
➋ "Martyrdom in the path of Allah"—apart from this, there are seven other forms of martyrdom explicitly mentioned in this hadith. For what reason have these been placed at the same rank as martyrdom in the path of Allah? Allah Ta'ala knows best. In any case, we must have certainty that Allah Ta'ala will honor the individuals mentioned in the hadith with the rank of martyrs.
➌ "Seven forms"—in some other hadiths, several other individual forms of martyrdom have also been mentioned. These are not contrary to this narration, because the mention of seven does not negate the existence of more. In other words, these seven have been mentioned as examples; otherwise, there are more.
➍ Visiting the sick is a meritorious act, and it also brings comfort to the patient.
➎ The acceptance of deeds depends on intentions. Therefore, if a person has made the intention for a certain act and has completed preparations for it, but does not get the opportunity to perform it, he will still receive the reward for that act according to his intention.
➏ A scholar should adopt such a method of explanation that the issue becomes firmly established in the hearts of the listeners, leaving no room for any doubt.
➐ Allah Ta'ala's great favor upon this ummah is that He has made several causes for martyrdom for it, so that this ummah may attain high ranks on their basis.
