´It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said:` "When a young daughter of the Messenger of Allah was dying, the Messenger of Allah picked her up and held her to his chest, then he put his hand on her, and she died in front of the Messenger of Allah. Umm Ayman wept and the Messenger of Allah said 'Oh Umm Ayman, do you weep while the Messenger of Allah is with you?' She said: 'Why shouldn't I weep when the Messenger of Allah is weeping." So the Messenger of Allah said "Verily, I am not weeping. Rather it is compassion.' Then the Messenger of Allah said: 'The believer is fine whatever the situation; even when his soul is being pulled from his body and he praises Allah, the Mighty and Sublime"'
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1844. Commentary: In reality, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was weeping only with tears, while Umm Ayman (radi Allahu anha)—his foster mother—was weeping with audible sound, and that is why he stopped her. As for weeping with tears, this is a natural matter at the time of distress. A person should not be so hard-hearted that he remains unaffected even by calamities, especially death. Weeping with tears is the result of that mercy which Allah, the Exalted, has placed within the creation. To deny this is to deny human nature itself. Furthermore, in this (audible wailing) there is an aspect of complaint, and a believer cannot even conceive of complaining against the Lord of all worlds. Rather, even at the time of death, he praises the Lord of all worlds. Allahumma aj‘alna min al-mu’minin haqqan (O Allah, make us truly among the believers).
