´It was narrated that Umm Salamah said:` "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'When you see the dead, say something good, for the angels say Amin to whatever you say; When Abu Salamah died, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I say?' He said: 'Say" Allahummaghfirlanaa wa lahu wa a 'qibni minhu 'uqbai hasanah (O Allah, forgive us and him, and compensate me well for this loss.)"' Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, compensated me with Muhammad."

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1826. Commentary:
➊ Here, the deceased is truly intended, meaning when you go to someone who has passed away, do not wail or lament, nor invoke curses upon yourselves, but rather make good supplications for the deceased.
➋ It is also Sunnah to recite this supplication at the time of any calamity: «انا للہ و انا الیہ راجعون ، اللھم ! اجرنی فی مصیبتی و اخلف لی خیرا منھا» "Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Grant me reward in my affliction and grant me something better in exchange for it." Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha recited this supplication upon the death of Abu Salamah radi Allahu anhu. (Sahih Muslim, Al-Jana'iz, Hadith: 918)

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: One should only utter words of goodness in the presence of a sick person or someone who is dying, so that neither the feelings of the patient nor those of the dying person are hurt, nor should there be any expression of impatience, panic, or bad opinion. This is because the angels present there say "Ameen" to the words of those present, which increases the likelihood of their acceptance and effect. Furthermore, when the person passes away, his heirs should recite this prescribed supplication so that Allah Ta'ala, Who is capable of all things and for Whom nothing is impossible, may grant them a better substitute.

1:
For example, say to a sick person, "May Allah grant you healing," and to a deceased person, "May Allah forgive you."

Benefits and Issues:
No matter how excellent and lofty human standards may seem in their own estimation, they can never comprehend the standard of Allah, the Exalted. Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha thought that who could be a husband like Abu Salamah radi Allahu anhu. However, due to the effect of the aforementioned supplication in obedience to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Allah, the Exalted, granted her the honor of becoming the wife of His Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and bestowed upon her the dignity of being the Mother of the Believers. Therefore, all heirs of the deceased should recite the aforementioned supplication and hope for the best replacement from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. In fact, if this supplication (اللهم أعقبنا عقبي صالحة, “O Allah, grant us a good replacement”) is recited even on the occasion of other lost things, then it is hoped that Allah, the Exalted, will grant the best replacement.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Visiting a person who is near death is also necessary.
➋ After death, people of knowledge and virtue should also go to the house of the deceased and supplicate for the forgiveness of the deceased and for beautiful patience (sabr jameel) for the relatives.
➌ The custom in our country, where mats or carpets are spread outside and people sit for three days, and people come repeatedly to recite Fatiha, is not established from the Sunnah. There is also no justification for reciting Fatiha on this occasion. Supplication can be made for the deceased and for his heirs without raising the hands.
➍ The heirs of the deceased should recite these prescribed (masnun) supplications to fill the void left by the deceased, so that Allah, the Exalted, may grant them a better substitute.
➎ It is also prescribed (masnun) to recite this supplication at the time of any calamity: (إِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا) (Sahih Muslim, Al-Jana'iz, Chapter: What is to be said at the time of calamity? Hadith: 918)
“We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Grant me reward in my calamity and grant me better than it in its place.”
