1820. Commentary: Death is under the control of Allah Ta'ala. Death cannot be brought forward or delayed by anyone's request or prevention, so what is the benefit of asking for something that cannot be obtained by asking, rather its time is fixed. Instead, one should use the available life to increase in good deeds and for repentance and seeking forgiveness, because these things are within one's control. A person should concern himself with matters that are within his own choice, and leave matters beyond his control to Allah Ta'ala.

Hadith Footnote: In some manuscripts, there is an additional phrase here: "Qala Abu Abdillah: Abu Ubaid, his name is Sa'd bin Ubaid, the freed slave of Abdur Rahman bin Azhar." That is, Imam Bukhari said that Abu Ubaidah's name is Sa'd bin Ubaid; he was the servant of Abdur Rahman bin Azhar.

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, there is glad tidings and good news for the righteous person, and a warning for the evildoer. It is as if it is being said:
If he is righteous, then he should abandon the desire for death; rather, he should perform even more good deeds. And if he is an evildoer, he too should not long for death, but rather strive to avoid evil deeds so that his end is not a bad one, for this is a very dangerous matter. That is, if the believer remains alive, there is hope for an increase in his good deeds, and even the sinner should not wish for death, for there is hope for his repentance.
This great favor of Allah Ta'ala is far greater than the desire for death.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Islam presents to the believer only the bright aspect of his life, and protects him from the dark aspect. Therefore, with the increase in age, the hope of an increase in good deeds and acts of obedience is instilled, and there is no mention of becoming entangled in sins. This is because from a believer, only good deeds should be expected, and repentance and seeking forgiveness from sins should be anticipated.
