Hadith 1795

´It was narrated that Aishah said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever persists in praying twelve rak'ahs each day and night will enter Paradise: Four before Zuhr and two after, two rak'ahs after Maghrib, two rak'ahs after Isha' and two rak'ahs before Fajr.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1795. Commentary: Benefit: These are called "Sunan Mu’akkadah" because the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed them regularly. If any were missed occasionally, he made them up (qada). Therefore, one should not be negligent regarding them. Deliberately abandoning a Sunnah Mu’akkadah without a valid excuse is blameworthy. By "excuse" is meant travel, illness, or extreme preoccupation, etc.

English Commentary:
1:
Apart from the obligatory prayers, every prayer that is performed before or after them as Sunnah is of two types:
One type is that upon which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) maintained regularity;
these are called Sunnah Mu’akkadah or Sunan Rawatib.
The second type is that upon which he did not maintain regularity; these are called Sunnah Ghair Mu’akkadah.
The total number of Sunnah Mu’akkadah is twelve rak‘ahs,
the details of which are mentioned in this narration.
It is preferable to perform these Sunnahs at home.
However, if it becomes difficult to perform them at home,
such as when there is a risk of completely forgetting them if they are postponed for home,
then they should be performed in the mosque.

2:
In this hadith, there is mention of four rak‘ahs before the obligatory prayer of Dhuhr, while in the narration of Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), there is mention of two rak‘ahs.
This can be reconciled in such a way that both ways are permissible.
The practice of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was in both manners—sometimes he would do this and sometimes that.
Or it is also possible that he would perform two rak‘ahs at home and then, upon arriving at the mosque, perform another two;
or it may have been that he would perform four at home and, upon entering the mosque, perform two as Tahiyyat al-Masjid (greeting the mosque), so Ibn ‘Umar considered these two as the Sunnah Mu’akkadah.
Another reconciliation is that the incident narrated by Ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) is his own observation of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) action (which sometimes was also four), but the hadith of ‘A’ishah (radi Allahu anha) and Umm Habibah (radi Allahu anha) is a verbal statement, which is for the Ummah.
And in any case, there is greater reward in performing four.

Benefits and Issues:

The most important prayer is the obligatory (fard) prayers.
However, the emphasized (mu’akkadah) Sunnah prayers also hold great significance.
Therefore, one should not be negligent in performing them.

It is also permissible to perform two rak‘ahs before Zuhr. ( : Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Tahajjud, Chapter: Voluntary Prayers after the Obligatory, Hadith: 1172; and Sahih Muslim, Salat al-Musafirin, Chapter: The Virtue of the Regular Sunnah Prayers before and after the Obligatory Prayers and Clarification of Their Number, Hadith: 729)

It is also correct to perform four Sunnah rak‘ahs after the obligatory (fard) prayer of Zuhr, as will be mentioned in Hadith 1160, insha Allah.

Mu’akkadah means the emphasized Sunnah prayers, i.e., those Sunnah prayers which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed regularly before and after the obligatory prayers, or whose importance and virtue he stated. These are called Sunan Mu’akkadah or Sunan Rawatib.
