Hadith 1783

´It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said:` "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to pray two rak'ahs of Fajr when he heard the Adhan and he made them brief."

Brief Explanation
1؎ : The reason for declaring it objectionable (nakarah) has been stated as its opposition to the well-known narration in which it is mentioned that when the mu’adhdhin would finish the call to prayer (adhan) and dawn would appear, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform two light units (rak‘ahs) of prayer. However, it is better to call it shaadh (anomalous) rather than munkar (rejected), and the reason for this is that this text is not preserved from Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma), because Muslim has narrated it in his Sahih through the route of «عروۃ عن عائشہ», in which it is stated that when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would hear the adhan, he would perform two rak‘ahs of the dawn (fajr) prayer, and he would perform them lightly. There is also the possibility that the author’s intent is that the preserved narration from Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) is other than this text. And Allah knows best.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1783. Commentary: Imam al-Nasa'i rahimahullah's intent is that this hadith is not authentic from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma; rather, it is narrated from Aisha and Hafsa radi Allahu anha. Since in its chain of narration (isnad) Habib ibn Abi Thabit is a mudallis, and he narrates this report with 'an' (the ambiguous transmission), for this reason there is a strong suspicion that there is some flaw in the chain. Or, with this chain, this hadith does not come from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma; rather, some other narration comes. (The difference between both explanations should be understood carefully.)
