Hadith 1700

´It was narrated from Ubayy bin Ka'b that:` The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray witr with three rak'ahs. In the first he would recite: "Glorify the Name of Your Lord, the Most High" in the second: "Say: O you disbelievers!", and in the third: "Say: He is Allah, (the) One". And he would say the Qunut before bowing, and when he finished he would say: Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus (Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy) three times, elongating the words the last time.

➊ The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain of transmission by the verifier of this book; however, other authentic narrations support the meaning mentioned in the hadith, and other scholars have also declared this narration to be authentic. Therefore, this narration is weak in its chain but sound and actionable in meaning. See: (Sahih Sunan an-Nasa’i, no. 1700, and Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh Sunan an-Nasa’i: 18/72)

➋ One method of performing Witr is that three Witr are prayed with one salutation (salam). (See also, hadith: 1699)

1731. Commentary: The contradiction lies in the chain of narration, and it is as follows: Husayn did not mention Ubayy ibn Ka'b radi Allahu anhu in the chain, whereas Zubayd and Talhah did mention him. That is, Zubayd and Talhah relate it with the chain through Ubayy ibn Ka'b radi Allahu anhu, while Husayn relates it through Abdur Rahman ibn Abza radi Allahu anhu. However, this is not a real contradiction. It is possible that Abdur Rahman ibn Abza radi Allahu anhu initially received the hadith through Ubayy ibn Ka'b radi Allahu anhu, and later also heard it directly from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and then narrated it through both ways. In short, such apparent differences do not affect the authenticity of the hadith.

1430. Commentary: In Sunan an-Nasa'i [باب ذکر الاختلاف علی شعبة فیه۔ حدیث: 1733], it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say the aforementioned words three times, and the last time he would raise his voice. Also, in the authentic narration of Sunan ad-Daraqutni, it is stated that after reciting the words mentioned in the hadith three times, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would also recite these words aloud: (Rabb al-mala'ikati wa ar-ruh) [سنن دارقطني: 30/2 حدیث: 1644]

Benefits and Issues:

Here, "witr" refers to the prayer that is performed at the end of the tahajjud (night prayer).
It can be performed in the form of one rak‘ah (unit of prayer) as well.
It can also be performed in the form of three or five rak‘ahs; see: (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1190)

Reciting the above-mentioned surahs in witr is Sunnah.

Explanation:
From this hadith, it is understood that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform three witr. In every rak‘ah, along with Surah al-Fatihah, he would also recite another surah. However, this does not establish that the three witr were performed with two tashahhud. If the Hanafis have deduced from such ahadith, then this deduction is not correct.

© Hadith Narrator:
«حضرت ابی بن کعب» His kunyah is Abu Mundhir. Because he belonged to the branch Najjar of the Ansar tribe Khazraj, he was called Ansari, Najjari, and Khazraji. He was the leader of the Qurra (reciters), and for this reason, he became famous with the title Sayyid al-Qurra. He was among the scribes of revelation and among those fortunate people who had the honor of compiling the Qur’an. During the golden era of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he also used to give fatwa. He participated in the Second Pledge of Aqabah. He participated in Badr and the subsequent battles. There is a difference of opinion regarding the year of his death. He passed away in one of the years: 19, 20, 22, or 30, 32, 33 AH. And Allah knows best what is correct.
