Hadith 1699

'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not say the salam after the two rak'ahs of Witr.

1699. Commentary: The aforementioned narration is weak in its chain of transmission, and furthermore, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared it to be irregular (shadh). However, Allamah Aytubi rahimahullah (the commentator of Sunan al-Nasa’i) has cited the following meaning from Imam Muhammad ibn Nasr rahimahullah and has approved it. He states: Its meaning is that you do not end the prayer with salam after two units (rak‘ahs), nor do you end it after seven or nine units, but rather after three units; this is not established, rather the opposite is established. The commentator of al-Nasa’i, Allamah Aytubi rahimahullah, has cited this meaning from Imam Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Marwazi and has approved it.
