Hadith 1609

´It was narrated that Abdullah said:` "Mention was made in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about a man who slept all night until morning. He said: 'That is a man in whose ear the Shaitan has urinated.'"

Explanation & Benefits

1609. Commentary: The apparent wording indicates that the man had also slept through the obligatory prayers of ‘Isha and Fajr. That is why the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reproached him; otherwise, if he had performed the ‘Isha prayer before sleeping and then performed the Fajr prayer upon waking, there would be no reason for reproach. However, Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah has included this narration under the chapter of standing in the night (qiyam al-layl), which suggests that the person had slept through the night prayer (qiyam al-layl). And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
This hadith is, in essence, a summary of all prescriptions for health and happiness. Experience has also shown the same: those who get up at the time of tahajjud or early in the morning, perform ablution (wudu), and pray, their entire day passes in peace, comfort, and joy. And those who remain lying in bed, sleeping until late in the morning, are often sick, lethargic, and indolent by temperament.

All physicians and doctors have agreed that waking up early in the morning and taking in the morning air is extremely beneficial for human health.

I (Hazrat Mawlana Waheed al-Zaman, rahimahullah) say: those who get up early in the morning, complete their purification (taharah), and engage in prayer and remembrance of Allah, Allah Ta’ala grants them abundance in sustenance, and their homes are filled with immense blessings and happiness. And those who do not pray the morning (fajr) prayer and sleep until late in the day, they are often afflicted with poverty and illness, and misfortune spreads in their homes.

Although all prayers are obligatory (fard), special care should be taken regarding the fajr prayer, because the health and happiness of this world are attained through it.

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, what is meant by the devil urinating is that he truly urinates.
In this way, he humiliates the one who neglects prayer, for such a person deserves only disgrace and humiliation. The ear is specifically mentioned because it is the place of hearing; when it becomes heavy, the person will not be able to wake up. Urine is specifically mentioned because it quickly permeates holes and pores, causing laziness.

Some scholars have interpreted this to mean that the devil fills his ears with falsehood and prevents him from hearing the truth.

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, through this hadith, has unveiled the character of the devil and his filthy traits.

Hadith Commentary:
When Satan eats and drinks, then he must also urinate.
There is nothing in this that goes against reason.
Some have said that the meaning of urinating here is that Satan has made that person subservient to him, and the specification of the ear is because a person wakes up by hearing sound through the ear.
Satan, by urinating in it, has filled his ears.
Qurtubi and others have said: “There is nothing preventing this, as there is nothing impossible in it, because it is established that Satan eats, drinks, and marries, so there is nothing preventing him from urinating.”
(Fath al-Bari)
That is, Qurtubi and others have said that there is no problem in this.
When it is established that Satan eats, drinks, and even marries, then what is so far-fetched about him urinating in the ear of such a heedless, neglectful person who does not pray?

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
When Satan eats, drinks, and even marries, then it is not beyond reason that he urinates in the ear of the one who neglects prayer.
(2)
By "prayer" here is meant the obligatory prayer (fard salah), because in one narration it is explicitly stated that he slept through the obligatory prayer.
(3)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this that it is not correct to deduce the obligation of the night prayer (tahajjud) from such narrations, because this warning pertains to the obligatory prayer.
Then, in a narration from Abu Sa'id radi Allahu anhu, it is mentioned that when Satan ties knots and a person does not wake up for prayer, those knots remain as they are, and furthermore, Satan urinates in his ear.
The effect of this satanic act is that the one who neglects prayer becomes even more lethargic.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The statement that Satan urinates in a person’s ears is a metaphor and an allusion, the purpose of which is to indicate that Satan has become the cause of this person’s corruption and misguidance. That is, he is a follower of Satan, and Satan has become dominant and prevailing over him. However, it is not far-fetched that Satan actually does urinate, but just as his own presence is not perceived, likewise the act of his urinating is also not perceived. Nevertheless, as a result of this, heaviness and dullness are produced in the ears. For this reason, the person’s eyes do not open, and he remains asleep until late in the day, and is unable to participate even in the obligatory (fard) morning prayer.

Benefits and Issues:

To put a child to sleep, one pats on the ears or near the ears.
When Satan wants to deprive someone of standing in prayer at night, instead of patting, he adopts a satanic method: he urinates in that person's ears.

Just as the bodies of the jinn are hidden from our sight,
likewise, we do not perceive their movements and stillness.
Their eating and drinking are also different from those of humans.
Similarly, we do not sense their urination.
But just as their existence is certain,
so too is the effect of their actions above any doubt or suspicion,
because we have been informed of this by the truthful Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Although the tahajjud prayer is voluntary (nafl) and its omission is not a sin, nevertheless, being deprived of its blessings is a cause of joy for Satan.
Therefore, it is Satan’s desire
that a person remains deprived of this great act.
For this reason, a person should strive as much as possible to stand (in prayer) during the nights.
