´It was narrated from Sa'd bin Ishaq bin Ka'b bin Ujrah, from his father, that:` His grandfather said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Maghrib in the masjid of Banu 'Abdul-Ashhal, and when he finished praying some people stood up and offered Nafl prayers. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'You should offer this prayer in your houses.'"
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1601. Commentary: This "prayer" refers to the Sunnah prayers of Maghrib or, generally, to Sunnah and supererogatory (nafl) prayers. This instruction is for recommendation (istihbab), not obligation (wujub), because it is established from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself that he performed supererogatory prayers (nawafil) in the mosque after Maghrib. See: (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Tatawwu’, Hadith: 1301). Nowadays, life has become so fast-paced and busy that there is a risk of missing the Sunnah prayers after the obligatory ones, which is a reprehensible matter. If this is the case, then the regular Sunnah prayers (sunan rawatib) should be performed in the mosque immediately after the obligatory prayer.

English Translation:
1:
According to the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), in general, it is more virtuous to perform the Sunnah and Nafl (supererogatory) prayers at home. However, it is permissible to perform them in the mosque. In this era, it is actually better to perform them in the mosque because in most homes there is no arrangement for prayer; when a person reaches home, he is confronted with certain issues and ends up forgetting the prayer, and so on. Therefore, it is better to perform them in the mosque than not to perform them at all. However, if someone has full ability over himself, then he should certainly perform them at home.

1300. Commentary:
It is recommended (mustahabb) that the Sunnah prayers of Maghrib, or any other supererogatory (nafl) prayers after it, be performed in the home.
