´It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed that:` The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to go out on the day of 'Eid and pray two rak'ahs, then he would deliver the Khutbah and enjoin giving charity, and the ones who gave most charity were the women. If he had any exigency or he needed to send an army he would speak of that, if not, he would go back.

Hadith Commentary: The purpose of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah in this chapter is to show that during the era of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there was no pulpit (minbar) placed in the Eid ground, nor was there any special building for the prayer. The Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers were performed in an open field. When Marwan became the governor of Madinah, he sent a pulpit to the Eid ground for the sermon, and the sermon for the two Eids should have been delivered after the prayer. However, Marwan, contrary to the Sunnah, began the sermon before the prayer. Alas, the natural simplicity of Islam was soon altered, and then day by day further additions continued to be made. The Hanafi scholars in recent times have introduced a new addition: before the prayer and sermon, they deliver an admonition (wa'z), spending half an hour or more on it, and then later the prayer and sermon are concluded merely as a formality within a few minutes. Today, there is no Kathir bin Salt who would take notice of these innovations.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Sunnah is that a pulpit (minbar) should not be used for the Eid sermon (khutbah) in the Eid prayer ground (musalla), because this was the practice of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding the Eid sermon. In an open area, there is no need for it, since in such a place everyone can see the imam while he delivers the sermon, whereas in a mosque, the pulpit is needed because, due to the limited space, not all listeners can see the preacher. Therefore, in the mosque, a pulpit is arranged for the sermon. From this narration, it is clearly known that in the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), a pulpit was not arranged for the Eid sermon, because after performing the prayer, he would turn and stand facing the people. In the narration of Ibn Hibban, it is mentioned that he would stand in the place where he had prayed, and in the narration of Ibn Khuzaymah, it is mentioned that after performing the prayer, he would stand right there on his heels. (Fath al-Bari: 2/579)
(2)
In the narration presented by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), it is explicitly stated that the first person to arrange a pulpit in the Eid prayer ground was Marwan ibn al-Hakam. This means that before him, a pulpit was not used for the Eid sermon. However, in some narrations of Bukhari, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), after finishing the sermon, descended and went towards the women. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Eidayn, Hadith: 978) Similarly, in the narration reported from Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu), the words “descended” are found. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Tafsir, Hadith: 4898) From these narrations, some scholars have deduced the issue of arranging a pulpit in the Eid prayer ground. The answer to this has been given by Hafiz Ibn Qayyim (rahimahullah) in these words: According to the narrations, the first to arrange a pulpit for the Eid sermon in the Eid prayer ground was Marwan ibn al-Hakam, and then a permanent pulpit of unbaked bricks was constructed there. Furthermore, in most narrations, the words “descended” are not present; it is possible that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was standing on a raised place, and then descended from there to go to the women to deliver the sermon to them. (Zad al-Ma'ad by Ibn Qayyim: 1/447) However, in Sahih Ibn Hibban, it is explicitly stated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) delivered the Eid sermon while on his mount. (Sahih Ibn Hibban, al-Salat, Hadith: 2825) From this, it is understood that delivering the Eid sermon while sitting on a mount or the like is permissible and allowed. And Allah knows best.

Takhrij:
«أخرجه البخاري، العيدين، باب الخروج إلي المصلي بغير منبر، حديث:956، ومسلم، صلاة العيدين، حديث:889.»©Explanation:
The following points are established from this hadith:
➊ There is no action established from you (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) before the Eid prayer in the Eid ground.
➋ The sermon (khutbah) should be after the prayer.
➌ The preacher (khatib) should face the audience.
➍ The sermon should be delivered while standing, and the preacher should adopt a tone of admonition and advice in his address.
He should not narrate irrelevant and useless stories.
➎ The listeners should remain seated in their rows and face the imam.
➏ Performing the Eid prayers in the Eid ground (musalla) and not in the mosque is the Sunnah.
Nowadays, without any valid excuse, it has become common practice to perform the Eid prayer in mosques, which in any case should be discontinued.
➐ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not use a pulpit (minbar) in the Eid prayer.
It is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that Marwan was the first to have a pulpit placed in the Eid ground and delivered the sermon upon it.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Eidayn, Hadith: 956) However, according to the narration of Ibn Hibban, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did, on one occasion, deliver the Eid sermon while seated on a she-camel, from which it is established that delivering the sermon while mounted is permissible.
