Hadith 1576

´It was narrated that Jabir said:` "I attended the prayer with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the day of 'Eid. He started with the prayer before the Khutbah, with no Adhan and no Iqamah. When he finished the prayer, he stood leaning on Bilal, and he praised and glorified Allah (SWT) and exhorted the people, reminding them and urging them to obey Allah (SWT). Then he moved away and went to the women, and Bilal was with him. He commanded them to fear Allah (SWT) and exhorted them and reminded them. He praised and glorified Allah, then he urged them to obey Allah, then he said: 'Give charity, for most of you are the fuel of Hell.' A lowly woman with dark cheeks said: 'Why, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'You complain a great deal and are ungrateful to your husbands.' They started taking off their necklaces, earrings and rings, throwing them into Bilal's garment, giving them in charity."

1576. Commentary:

➊ Although the address of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was to the female Companions (sahabiyyat), the intended meaning is all women in general. Although these two characteristics are also possible in men, they are almost inherent in women, which is why they were especially admonished.

➋ According to the majority of scholars, addressing women separately is a particular characteristic of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), because after him, the Rightly Guided Caliphs did not do so, even though they were ardent followers of the Sunnah. Moreover, this would necessitate an abundance of sermons or the interruption of the sermon, and both matters are not correct. Some say that it is necessary for the imam to admonish and advise women separately as well, but this is not correct because this opinion is rare. However, if there is a need for it somewhere, then that is another matter, and action can be taken according to the need. And Allah knows best.

➌ The Eid prayers are performed without adhan (call to prayer) and iqamah (second call to prayer).

➍ The Eid prayer is performed first, and the sermon is delivered afterwards.

➎ Women should also go to the Eid ground (eidgah) for the Eid prayer. There should be reasonable and safe arrangements for them at the eidgah.

➏ A woman can give charity (sadaqah) from her wealth without informing her husband.

➐ Charity (sadaqah) repels calamity.

➑ It is permissible to demand charity and alms from the wealthy in order to spend on the poor and needy and to fulfill their needs.
